How do you say NO THANKS, without being rude?

Have you ever been approach by couple of elders from Mormon Church?  About 2 or 3 months ago, I got a visit two young mormon elders.  Both are probably in their late teen or early 20’s.  One speaks lao and other speaks cambodian.  These two are very determine to spread the words of jesus christ, even I told them I’m not interested.  At first, how they even know that I’m laotian.  It is not like they were going from doors to doors in the neighborhood.  As far I know, I’m the only laotian in this particular circle and second asian to the neighborhood.  They actually drove to my place and I was little puzzled by the whole thing.  I asked them all kind of questions like.. how long they been learning how to speak lao and cambodian.  Who taught it to them and where.. and last question was, how you know that i’m laotian and where i live?  One elder kind of hesitate to admit that one of my relative gave them the address.  I swear, I will kick my cousin ass when I see him in few weeks. hahahhah  They both invited me to attend a service and see what they had to offer.  I quickly turn down the offer and told them I’m NOT interested.

On Monday night, I was watching the monday night football game on tv and enjoying my beer.  I heard this loud knock on the door and I was not expecting anyone to stop by.  Most people would ring the door bell instead of knocking on the door.  I opened the door and to my surprise… here are the two mormon elders again trying to spread their words.  I just just simply say, no thanks and I don’t have time to talk right now.

It’s very easy for me, I just give them a big smile and said, “Thanks for sharing your religion with me, but I’m a Buddhist. 🙂 ” That usually caught them off guard, and it works for me. If that don’t work, then ask them, “Can I share my religion with you? or would you like to visit the Buddhist temple with me.?” They know that you’re committed, so they won’t bother you again. 🙂

Oh, one thing, since you’re no committed to any religion, then they think you’re available. I know it sounds like a person trying to get a date. Lol.

seeharhed, the only problem with my advice is that if they started showing interest of wanting to go to Wat with you, then you’re in a deep poo. 🙂

If that’s the case, they must really be interested in you. Lol.

    Hi seeharhed,
I think you made the mistake of asking them too many questions. That is a sign of interest from their point of view.

A polite, “no thank you – I’m not interested” would be fine. I’m sure they’ve seen and heard people that are much worse.

Btw, why did your cousin give out such personal info so easily? You really need to tell your cousin to leave you off the list. Especially if they come knocking at your door at night.

      Hi Cambree,

I know, I made a mistake by asking questions about how long they been learning the language and where.

Tell you the truth, I don’t know why my cousin gave them my address. Probably trying to convert me, I guess. I’ll see him in couple of week, I’ll be kicking his ass for sure. LOL

      Thanks for stopping by:-).

    Hi, Seeharhed!

    Interesting blog you got here.

I am simply amazed at how these young men can speak foreign languages.
We have several Asian Shopping area here in Dallas Metro. These people are there every weekend but I haven’t seen them in many months now. They approached me and started speaking perfect Vietnamese I knew some but not to have conversation with them. They asked me what I was and I told them I was Lao. Then the other person started to speak Lao. I was astonished. I told them I was a Buddhist right away and I was not interested in other religion. They just left me alone after that.

You have to say “No” because if you don’t they will keep at it. If you started to have a conversation they definitely think you are interested. Be like people from the South. We are blunt and straight to the point.
